We are deeply saddened to share the news that Dr. Michael Sullivan, Mission of Mercy’s Chief Medical Officer and co-founder of the Maryland-Pennsylvania medical program, passed away unexpectedly earlier this month. He was well known for his great sense of humor, love of the game of basketball, devotion to his Catholic faith, and selflessness with which he served his patients and community.
Dr. Sullivan pursued a medical career on a U.S. Navy scholarship and served as a physician in the Navy until being honorably discharged in 1982. He worked at a medical center in Danville, Penn., and went on to launch the first Mission of Mercy clinics in Maryland and Pennsylvania in 1994.
Over more than three decades, Dr. Sullivan lovingly cared for thousands of patients in our clinics. He oversaw MOM’s three regional medical programs, including Arizona and Texas, and served as a mentor to countless volunteer physicians and nurses over the years.
Dr. Sullivan’s essence exuded kindness and understanding, and he made it his life’s work to care for those who were less fortunate. He will be remembered by all who knew him with great love, admiration and gratitude.
