In Memoriam: Dr. Charles Levison

Earlier this month, we learned of the passing of our beloved long-time volunteer Dr. Charles Levison, affectionately known as “Dr. Charlie” around our clinics. He devoted more than 21 years of compassionate service to Mission of Mercy patients and earned the admiration and respect of staff, patients and fellow volunteers alike.
“Dr. Charlie was one of a kind and had a servant heart for providing quality medical care to those in our community who need it the most,” said Dr. Brad Smith, medical director for Mission of Mercy. “He lived life to the fullest, never letting age slow him down. He will remain an inspiration to us all as someone who lived his purpose and enjoyed his passions each and every day.”
Dr. Charlie was originally from Pittsburgh and practiced family medicine since 1957. Having completed his undergraduate studies and medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, he went on to serve for the U.S. Public Health Service. During that time, his work took him to Indian reservations in Texas and Arizona, where he settled in 1960. He fell in love with the beauty of Arizona and especially enjoyed horseback riding and the outdoors. He was preceded in passing by his beloved wife of 61 years, Helen, a Registered Nurse Anesthetist and talented artist.
“We will miss Dr. Charlie and send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family,” said Paula Carvalho, executive director of Mission of Mercy. “May you be comforted by the knowledge that he helped heal so many over his lifetime and that he shared his gifts selflessly with all of us.”
